|a Biographical information: Liyongo Fumo is a mythical Swahili poet and hero, and it is tought that he composed many oral songs and poems narrating about his life time, which is around the 12th and 13th century. For more information on Liyongo, see the field ‘relevant publication’. -- Muyaka bin Haji lived in Mombasa between AD 1776-1840, and was one of the most outstanding poets of the mashairi genre. According to Abdulaziz (1979) Muyaka wrote some 150 poems of popular Swahili poetry, and the themes of his poetry touch on the cultural and political life of his community of that time. |

|a In this long section of MS 47754 there are two main sections. First, there is a collection of poems attributed to the mythical Swahili hero Fumo Liyongo, and in the following section, there is a large collection of poems by Muyaka bin Haji. The material of the Muyaka collection was used by Hichens for the compilation of the Diwani ya Muyaka, an anthology of the popular poetry of Muyaka. The poems by Muyaka were transcribed with the Arabic scribing system introduced by Taylor. Taylor during his stay in Mombasa ‘invented’ some new signs for the Arabic script in Swahili that were used mainly by Mwalimu Sikujua. In the middle of this section, we also find a letter to Taylor from Suleiman al-Hanawy requesting for red ink to be sent to him. |
