- Abstract:
- In this long section of MS 47754 there are two main sections. First, there is a collection of poems attributed to the mythical Swahili hero Fumo Liyongo, and in the following section, there is a large collection of poems by Muyaka bin Haji. The material of the Muyaka collection was used by Hichens for the compilation of the Diwani ya Muyaka, an anthology of the popular poetry of Muyaka. The poems by Muyaka were transcribed with the Arabic scribing system introduced by Taylor. Taylor during his stay in Mombasa ‘invented’ some new signs for the Arabic script in Swahili that were used mainly by Mwalimu Sikujua. In the middle of this section, we also find a letter to Taylor from Suleiman al-Hanawy requesting for red ink to be sent to him. ( en )
