Abstract:
Rather than a direct translation, this poem is perhaps best described a waadhi, or religious admonition, based on the Suratil Inshqaq of the Qur’an, which concerns ‘siku ya kiama,’ the Day of Judgement. The verses of the chapter form the organisational basis of the poem; most stanzas follow a verse or verses to which they have some form of relation -- not necessarily that of direct translation. Structurally, the relationship between Suratil Inshqaq and the poem may be outlined as follows (with the presumption that the opening ‘bismillahi’ does not number among the verses.) The first stanza functions as an introduction; the second treats the third Qur’anic verse; the third stanza treats the second verse; the fourth stanza treats the fourth verse; the fifth stanza is preceded by the fifth verse but does not represent its content; the sixth stanza treats the sixth verse; the seventh stanza treats the seventh and eighth verses; the eight stanza treats the tenth and eleventh verses; the ninth stanza treats the thirteenth verse; the tenth stanza treats the fourteenth and fifteenth verses; the eleventh stanza treats the sixteenth and seventeenth verses; the twelfth stanza treats the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth verses; the thirteenth stanza treats the twenty-first verse; the fourteenth stanza treats the twenty-second verse; the fifteenth stanza treats the twenty-fourth verse; and the sixteenth stanza treats the twenty-fifth verse. The third, ninth and twenty-third verses are omitted from the poem. Errors are made in representing Arabic words in the Roman alphabet. ( en )
