Abstract:
This is a typescript of Utenzi wa Zaburi, which was published by Ndanda Mission Press in about 1965. The utenzi is a translation into Swahili of the first 48 biblical psalms. In this version the stanzas are consecutively numbered, and their division into individual psalms is not indicated as it is in the published work. ( en )
General Note:
Biographical information: Mathias Mnyampala was born in 1917 in Ihumwa, north of Dodoma. A member of the Gogo ethnic group, he became a Catholic and attended secondary school in Bihawana. -- Mnyampala was one of the first widely admired poets who was not a native speaker of Swahili. His reputation as a poet and advocate of the Swahili language flourished after Tanganyika gained independence in 1961. In addition to his translation of the psalms, he composed epic poems and developed the ngonjera verse form, in which he wrote on political themes. He also wrote on the history and customs of the Wagogo in Historia, Mila na Desturi za Wagogo. -- Mnyampala assisted in translating Tanzania’s legal code from English (as inherited from the British) into Swahili. He founded the society UKUTA, which worked to advance the Swahili language and its poetry. He died in 1969.
