- Abstract:
- This is an unusual manuscript, which is difficult to describe. Some 2200 cards of Swahili words are contained in a large box with a blue cover. This material was meant to be a word list. However, it remained in a disorganized form, which is impossible to put in a consistent order. The cataloguers have accordingly decided not to organize the cards in alphabetical order, and simply to indicate the number of cards and provide some examples. In some cards Hichens gives a Swahili noun with the translation and explanation in English. On Others, he provides a root with its noun and plural equivalents, i.e. Wungu, n. God; pl Mungu. In Other instances, he also provides the word in Arabic script. Some of the translations provided by Hichens contain errors. ( en )
