520 3    |a The first part of the manuscript contains a collection of poems with translation and notes. All poems are of the epic genre, in the same style as the traditional Liyongo poems, to which they are also similar in content. Indeed, the first poem is entitled ‘Utenzi wa Liongo’. The poems are, however, not by Liongo, and the authors are unknown. It may even be, as suggested by the researcher, that the poems are composed in order to emulate the Liyongo genre. This volume seems to be Hichens’s notebook, as each short poem is follow by a translation and explanation of particular words, and general notes.
