Abstract:
The first part of the manuscript contains a collection of poems with translation and notes. All poems are of the epic genre, in the same style as the traditional Liyongo poems, to which they are also similar in content. Indeed, the first poem is entitled ‘Utenzi wa Liongo’. The poems are, however, not by Liongo, and the authors are unknown. It may even be, as suggested by the researcher, that the poems are composed in order to emulate the Liyongo genre. This volume seems to be Hichens’s notebook, as each short poem is follow by a translation and explanation of particular words, and general notes. ( en )

Biographical information: Fumo Liyongo is a mythical Swahili poet and hero, and it is tought that he composed many oral songs and poems narrating about his life time, which is around the 12th and 13th century. For more information on Liyongo, see the field ‘relevant publication’.
