|a Biographical information: Sheikh Abdalla al-Husniy was born in Mombasa at the beginning of 1900 in a family that originated from Hadramaut. He studied Islamic teaching with Sh. Said bin Ahmed, a well-known religious scholar. Sh. Abdalla became a Sheikh at the Anisa Mosque where he tought for many years and where he was buried in 1955. -- He was known for organising the Maulidi celebration, in the Anisa mosque, that was attended by many people from the Coast. After the maulidi he used to composed his famous waadhi, of which this one is an example. Sheikh Abdalla was Yahya Ali Omar’s religious teacher. |

|a This section contains a poem written by Sh. Abdalla al-Husniy, a famous religious scholar at the Hanisa Mosque in Mjua Kale, Mombasa. The content is a religious admonition to instruct the Muslim community on how to abide by the Islamic values and duties and not to follow any forbidden activities. Sh. Abdalla was very famous for composing Waadhi at the time of the Maulidi celebration that he used to organise at the Anisa Mosque. The Maulidi celebration at the Anisa Mosque was very famous across East Africa. The waadhi is followed by a short Utendi about a woman instructing her daughter on how to behave with her husband. This poem is similar in content to the famous poem ‘Utendi wa Mwana Kupona’ where Mwana Kupona is instructing her daughter on wifely duties. |
