A. I (9).
A Qur'án, imperfect at the beginning, lacking súras i–v and part of vi, written
in a very peculiar hand, unlike any that I have seen, attributed by the vendor, the
late Ḥájjí 'Abdu'l-Majíd Belshah, to the seventh (thirteenth) century, but by the
experts of the British Museum to the seventeenth or eighteenth century of our era.

A Persian commentary on the Qur'án, defective at beginning and end, of
unknown authorship, but probably composed in the eleventh and transcribed in the
thirteenth century of the Christian era. It begins with súra xxxviii, 20, and ends
with súra xcv. The margins of some of the pages, especially in the earlier part
of the volume, are filled with Turkish verses. There is one serious dislocation,
súra lv being omitted in its proper place and inserted after súra lxxxix, where
there is a considerable lacuna and further dislocations, for súra xcvi follows, and
after that súras xciv and xcv. As a specimen of the style, and for purposes of
comparison, the commentary on the first ten verses of súra lxxx (عبس وتولی) is
here given from ff. 233b–234a. After the continuous text of these ten verses,
which it is unnecessary to reproduce here, the commentary proceeds thus :
آورده اند که روزی عبد الله بن امـ مکتومـ و اورا عبد الله بن شريح گفتندی مردی بود
مکفوف نابينا بنزديك رسول خذای آمد و صناديد قريش جون عتبه بن ربيع و ابو جہل بن
هشامـ و عباس بن المطلب و غير ايشان حاضر بودند رسول عـ با ايشان سخن ميگفت و از
سر حرص بر ايمان ايشان خودرا بايشان داده بود و دعوة ميکرد ابن امـ مکتومـ نميدانسب که
ايشان حاضر اند و رسول با ايشان سخن ميگويد روی برسول آورد و گفت يا رسول الله اقرءنی
وعلمنی مما علمك الله از آنچ خذای بتو آموخته است بر من خوان بياموز و اين سخن
مکرر گردانيد رسول خذای روی از وی بگردانيد کراهت آنرا که سخن قطع ميبايست کردن
بآخر نا رسيده و نيز از برای آن تا کافران نگويند که اتباع محمد و مجيبان دعوت او نابينايان
وسفله خذای تعال اين آيات فرستاد و گفت عبس وتولی پس از آن هرگاه که وی آمدی
رسول خذای ويرا گرامی داشتی و گفتی مرحبا ای آنکسی که خذای وی با من
عتاب کرد و دو نوبت ويرا بر مدينه خليفه گردانيد و پس از آن در روی هيچ درويشی روی
ترش نگردانيد و فراپيش هيچ توانگری نيامد جمعی مفسران چنين گفته اند که اين عبوس از
رسول خذای بود و او بود که روی ترش کرد اما محققان گفته اند که رسول نبود که روی
