Abstract:
"The literal translation is intended to furnish the meaning of the character in each particular place, while Dr. Bridgman's free Translation is appended for the use of such persons unacquainted with Chinese as wish, to obtain the spirit of the original. The names of persons and places in the free translation are according to the Mandarin, and in the literal translation according to the Shanghai dialect.
