PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. The favourable reception accorded to the First Edition of this work has encouraged the Publishers to present this new Edition to the public. It has been carefully revised as well as slightly enlarged, and the Publishers trust it may be found to deserve the same cordial support as that given to its predecessor. It should perhaps be mentioned that a few of the subscribers to the First Edition suggested the use of diacritical marks in a Second Edition, in order to give the correct sound of every word, but the Publishers consider an array of marks in a work which has often to be hastily referred toas undoubtedly this little work haswould only be confusing, and they believe they are meeting the wishes of the majority when they adhere to the plan originally adopted, viz., that of writing the words in the third column 'phonetically, avoiding the use of any marks whatever.
