|a In this section there is material relating to the teaching of Swahili and of vernacular languages. In the first envelope there is a report about a survey produced by the Language Section of the Curriculum Development and Research Centre of Nairobi, in 1967. The survey was addressed by means of a questionnaire to Standard 4 Swahili teachers asking their view on the introduction of a new Swahili course. In SL43 there are four pages of information on Maryknoll Language School in Musoma, lake Victoria. The school was set up in 1967 to prepare expatriates to work in Tanzania rural areas. The preparation consisted of Swahili language and some introduction to the culture and history of the country. SL44 contains an essay by A M K Bagunywa about the teaching of vernacular languages in primary schools, and of the many the issues of bilingualism. In the fourth envelope, SL45 there is a paper presented by J D Wanjala Welime at the Eastern African Regional Conference on language and linguistics held at the University College, Dar es Salaam, in 1968. The title of the paper is ‘Problems of teaching Swahili at advanced level in the experience of the Friends School, Kamusinga, Kenya. The author was a teacher at the same school and he discusses the teaching problems faced while teaching. The fifth envelope, SL46, contains two short papers, by unknown authors, entitled respectively ‘Applied linguistics and Language teaching in Sweden’ and ‘Sweden’s part in the teaching of languages of wider communication in Asia and Africa’. SL47 contains a very short essay entitled ‘A note on the syllabus of Swahili classical literature in secondary schools and universities’ by JWT Allen in which he notes the lack of edited Swahili literary book to use as part of the syllabus. He then attached a draft list of possible material to be edited into a book. The final envelope of this section contains a short paper by Salim Kakhressa entitled ‘The problems of teaching Kiswahili in Kenya secondary schools’. |
