Abstract:
In this section there are four envelopes containing various historical material collected by Whiteley in Tanzania and Kenya. Most of the material was written by various scholars visiting either the University college of Dar es Salaam or Nairobi, between 1968 and 1970. The first envelope contains a paper by Frank Holmquist entitled ‘Community History and Reactions to the Launching of a co-operative Farming Scheme’, and it discusses the social history of the scheme in Kisii district among the Nyamoke people, in Kenya. The paper was presented at the conference of the Social Sciences Council at Makerere University College, Kampala, Uganda, in 1969. The second envelope contains three issues, respectively no. 2 of January 1968, no. 5 of July 1969, and no. 7 of July 1970, of ‘Tanzania Zamani’ the Bulletin of Research on pre-colonial history produced by the university of Dar es Salaam. Issue no. 2 is mainly dedicated to a conference on Oral history held in Tanzania. The conference dealt extensively with issues of methodology in conducting research on oral history. In general, the bulletins list the type of project that are undergoing and publications that appear in the year. The third envelope contains a paper about the oral traditions of the Meru, Mwimbe and Muthambe people of Mount Kenya. The paper was presented by J Fadiman, a visiting scholar at the cultural division of the Institute of Development Studies, University College, Nairobi, in 1970. A map of the area is enclosed. The last envelope (SL/22) contains recommended readings for the teaching course ‘Introduction to the study of primitive technology and material culture’. The reading list was probably prepared by Whiteley however this is not stated on the typescript. ( en )
