520 3    |a This section deals mainly with material relating to the standardization of the Swahili language. S/52 contains a memorandum concerning a project for a new English/Swahili-Swahili/English dictionary in lights of the inadequacies found in the first dictionary of this kind by F Johnson, published in 1939. So, the aim of the project was in fact to revise and expand Johnson’s dictionary. Those involved in this project were Whiteley, Allen, Harris, and a person only referred as Margaret. Correspondence between the project team is enclosed. The item also includes a letter from Harris to Guthrie regarding the introduction of further literary text for the B.A. degree. S/53 contains a guide to the reading of Swahili newspapers for Intermediary Swahili students. The booklet is divided into lessons and each one is built around a story from an East African newspaper. This was produced by the US Foreign Service Institute in Washington, D.C. in 1966. A critique to the project by Lyndon Harris is included. S/54 contains a essay by Mohamed Ali entitled ‘Ulinganifu wa maendelezo ya Kiswahili’ in which he argues that the Swahili grammar written by Europeans contains many irregularities and the orthography is also wrong in many instances. S/55 contains a copy of the Inter-Territorial Language Committee Bulletin dated October 1970. The issue discusses vocabulary development in Swahili.
