Abstract:
The first item of this section contains the translation from German into English of Carl Velten’s book ‘Prosa und Poesie der Suaheli’ published in Berlin in 1907. The translation was done by G S P Freeman-Greville in Tanga, in 1958, and it was sent to Whiteley as shown in the covering letter accompanying the translation. The book is divided as follow: - The ancient history of Kilwa Kisiwani - The ancient history of Kilwa Kivinje - The ancient history of Lindi - The origins of Mikindani - The history of Sudi - The ancient history of Kionga - The ancient history of Dar es Salaam - The history of former times in Bagamoyo - The ancient history of Pangani - The history of Kisaki The second item is an essay on the Beni Dance songs by H E Lambert, with example of a Beni songs recorded in Nairobi in 1918, with verse-to-verse translation.
