Notes
- Abstract:
- In this section there are two historical essays, respectively, about the Mrima region, situated in the north coast of Tanzania, and the town of Mombasa, referred as Mvita (old form). The essay on the Mrima region provides information about the various districts of the area, and about the customs and culture of the people, like wedding celebrations, and about the typical dance, ngoma. The essay on Mvita seems to have been written down from the radio programme ‘Sauti ya Mvita’ and it informs about the events of ‘Empire day’, a day celebrating the British Empire. A further essay is by Whiteley who discusses issues of Swahili verses and their thematic and prosodic developments. In S/40 there is a one page programme of the official visit of Princess Margaret to Arnautglu Community Centre in Dar-es-Salaam in 1956. The programme includes a loose page of poems in her honour.
