Abstract:
This envelope contains material relating to the famous Zanzibari slave trader Tippu Tip. The material, dating between 1890 and 1895, was sent to Whiteley from Sir R Gray who found it in the Zanzibar Archives. Some material was written by Tippu Tip himself where he describes his raiding travels to Central Africa by means of correspondence to various Europeans, including the explorers Stanley and Livingston, and to Zanzibari slave traders. Biographical information: Hamed bin Muhammed el Murjebi, known as Tippu Tipp, was a slave trader from Zanzibar who traded between East and Central Africa at the end of 19th century. He was a very powerful man who was befriended by many Europeans explorers. For more on his life see publications listed below.
