Abstract:
In this large section, the cataloguers decided to enclose twelve envelopes all containing material relating to Swahili linguistics. The first envelope, S/1, is the only one containing correspondence. The two letters enclosed are to Ernest Haddon from H E Lambert, and from O B Kopola. The first letter discusses the possible derivation of the words Bwana (Mr) and Mwana (Mrs, Ms). In the second letter, being the continuation of a previous one of which we have no record, Mr Kopola discusses the semantics of certain extended verb forms. In S/2, there are two papers by Whiteley about the syntax of sentences in East African Bantu languages, although he only discusses issues surrounding the Swahili language case. The paper entitled ‘Some characteristics of linguistics relationships’ is the draft of the complete version entitled ‘Some Problems of the syntax of sentences in a Bantu language of East Africa’. In S/3 there is a paper by Laszlo Dezso, a scholar from Budapest, entitled ‘Typological questions of the Swahili word order’ presented at the second International Congress of Africanists. This present copy was sent to Whiteley, in London, who was probably organising the conference. S/4 contains the draft version of a paper by Thomas Hinnebusch and Salam Mbaye entitled ‘Inalienable Possession in Swahili and Related Matters’. The paper was presented at the Linguistic Theory seminar at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1971. In S/5 there is a paper by J J Christie entitled ‘Some underlying structures in Swahili’ and he discusses Swahili syntax in relation to noun phrases and auxiliary verbs. Two further papers by J J Christie entitled ‘Some problems in Swahili morphology’ and ‘On an auxiliary node in Swahili’ are to be found in S/8 and S/9 of this same large section. S/6 contains a draft paper by Rajmund Ohly, a polish scholar, entitled ‘An Applicative Model of the Swahili language’. Ohly analyses the Swahili language by means of the structural linguistics method as it was laid out by the studies of Harris, Whiteley, and Okhotina. A bound copy of this MS is held in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. S/7 contains an undated copy of the Master dissertation of Sharifa Zawawi entitled ‘An appraisal of the present tense in Swahili and a new formulation’. The dissertation was submitted for the degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Philosophy at Columbia University, USA. In S/10 there is the same material as in S/2. Envelope S/11 contains a 32 pages list of verb roots, in alphabetical order, with sentence examples of the present and passive forms. S/12 contains the Institute of Swahili Research questionnaire and circular letter, in Swahili, for compiling research, produced by Whiteley. The questionnaire is undated. ( en )
