520 3    |a This section contains various papers on the classification of African languages. . The first envelope, GL/7, contains first a short outline by D Westermann and M A Bryan about the method of classification that they used in their book ‘Languages of West Africa. Then, an essay by B W Abdrzejewski entitled ‘Reflections on classification of Languages’ presented at an unnamed departmental seminar, probably a seminar held by Whiteley in Bantu languages in 1964. . GL/8 contains also a paper presented at what seems to be the same departmental seminar mentioned above, by D Dalby entitled ‘The Lexical description of African languages: a reconsideration of methodology’, dated 1967. . GL/9 contains a paper by B Heine entitled ‘Nilotic and Nilo-Hamitic: A linguistic review’ presented at the Cultural division of the Institute for Development Studies, University College, Nairobi. Dr Heine was a visiting research fellow at the Institute in 1970s. . GL/10 contains a loose appendix from the Journal ‘Tanganyika Notes and Records’, without related article, giving an outline vocabulary for African languages. The vocabulary was prepared by M Guthrie, as a tool for those conducting fieldwork in Bantu languages. GL/12 contains seven Linguistic bibliographies and a list of Linguistic periodicals. . GL/13 contains the second Report, dated November 1967, of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain. The Report is entitled ‘Language Research in progress, with particular reference to Great Britain’, and was edited by D Crystal. It also contains an alphabetical list of Linguistic Researchers with their addresses, and an extensive Linguistic bibliography. . Finally, GL/14 contains an article entitled ‘What is a Proverb?’ by G B Milner published on February 8 1969 in the weekly New Society. The author asks how to recognise a proverb, or ‘saying’.
