520 3    |a This section contains various papers relating to the study of Bantu languages and related linguistics. The first envelope contains an Outline of Bantu grammar written by Prof. C M Doke, Head of the Department of Bantu Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, dated 1943, and probably one of the first studies of this kind. . GL/2 contains a bibliography of studies of Proto-Bantu, compiled by A E Meeussen, and dated 1960. The works listed in the bibliography are divided into General studies, Phonology, Morphology, Noun system, Verbal system, Syntax, and Lexicon. . GL/3 contains miscellaneous papers on comparative Bantu including a typed and an handwritten list of starred forms, a chart of comparative common Bantu sounds for Swahili, Pokomo, Giryama, Kamba, and Gusii languages, and finally three letters of correspondence between Meeussen and Whiteley regarding work on comparative Bantu in the above languages. . GL/4 contains a critique to Malcolm Guthrie’s ‘Comparative Bantu’, especially in relation to Guthrie’s hypothesis for nuclear Bantu, presented by J C Sharman from the Cultural division of the Institute of Development Studies, University College, Nairobi, dated 1970. . GL/5 contains the manuscript for a book (called manual by the author) by Talmy Givon, of the department of Linguistics of the University of California, entitled ‘An Outline of the Grammatical structure of Central Bantu Languages: a field manual’, dated 1970. Finally, GL/6 contains a glossary for Bantu languages, compiled by Whiteley, entitled ‘An Annotated index of terms for the analysis and descriptions of Bantu language’. The glossary is meant to provide students of Bantu grammar and Bantu languages additional reference works to add to the material and information given in Whiteley’s lectures. The glossary was also meant for those who did not attend Whiteley’s lectures but that wanted to have information on the method to study Bantu languages, like fieldworkers for instance.
