Notes

Abstract:
This manuscript contains a poem attributed to Fumo Liyongo that is believed to celebrate his bride. The same poem with some variations may be found in MS 380548c. In this version, explanatory notes by Muhammad Kijumwa (which follow the poem) and sketches illuminate meaning on many (though not all) points. The most important textual difference between the two versions may be that the word ‘Yanga’ of 380548c here becomes ‘Manga’ (stanza 4) and ‘Mwanamanga’ (stanza 7), words that in this context suggest a woman from Arabia or Asia. Thus instead of asking Others to join in the praise of God (stanza 4), the poet asks them to join in praising his bride. Alice Werner’s transliteration of the poem follows the text and notes, which are in Arabic script. ( en,English, swahili, swahili,,, )
