Notes

Abstract:
This manuscript contains transliterations of poems in MS 47708, treating the first 14 pages of that manuscript. Although the present manuscript is entitled ‘Mashairi ya Liongo,’ no precise justification can be found in MS 47708 for this designation; MS 47708, while identifying various composers, appears to contain no mention of Liyongo. The transliterations in the present manuscript were apparently done by Alice Werner, on material she received from Muhammad Kijumwa. A note describes them as ‘only tentative’; and while they are generally faithful as letter-by-letter renderings, they often fail to represent the likely intended meaning of the Swahili - for there are complexities involved in the use of the Arabic alphabet. Using this manuscript with MS 47708 and bearing in mind the dictates of rhyme would help readers who wished to decipher the poems. See also the scope and content description for MS 47708. ( en )
