|a In this section, the cataloguers decided to provide a general description of the last 60 letters of this large file. In the previous items a more detailed description of individual letters has been given, whereas for the letters contained here the readers will gain more information by perusal. Some letters contain personal correspondence to Taylor by people who befriended or helped Taylor and Other missionaries. In particular, there is a letter from Bwana Hemedi who, together with Mwalimu Sikujua, was Taylor’s Swahili teacher and informants, as well as a letter from Husayn bib Khamis informing Taylor that Bwana Hemedi has died. Some letters deal more specifically with literary issues, like, for instance, that by Shaikh Burhan, before he was appointed Qadi of Zanzibar, where he tells Taylor that he will help him with the translation of an Arabic dictionary. Also to note that in some letters we may find extracts of poems or proverbs, like, for instance, in the letter by Husayn bin Khamis there is the proverb ‘Mgonjwa mwenziwe ni kit’anda’ (A sick man’s companion is his bed). The content of this letters should be read together with the content of MS 47769. |
