- Abstract:
- In this section of MS 47782 there are first four envelopes addressed to Taylor without the related letters. One envelope is addressed to the Giryama area where Taylor was staying. These are followed by two letters to Taylor from respectively Omar bin Bwana, offering congratulations for the birth of Taylor’s son, and from Sulayman bin Muhammad bin Rashid al-Shaqsi, both dated 1895. In between the two letters, there is a short note, dated AD1885 (AH 1302), from Mbaruk bin Rashid bin Salim to Fundi William, a former slave who became a blacksmith under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society. Fundi William became deacon responsible for the CMS station at Rabai, and was then ordained priest in 1895. Then, there is a long letter from the colonial officer Charles Euan-Smith to the Sultan of Chaga, al-Sultan Mandara, dated AD1888 (AH 1306). Mr Euan-Smith, British Consul-General in Zanzibar, writes in Swahili using Arabic script, however with some errors, for instance, he says ‘katika Unguja’ (in Zanzibar) rather than the correct form ‘Unguja’ (meaning ‘in’ Zanzibar). On the Other hand, the scripts are very clearly written and the reading is better than in the Other letters of this section. In this letter, Mr Euan-Smith tells the Sultan that their friendship is important to him, and the he will help him. He also informs him that two missionaries will travel to Taveta, and ask for assistance for them. ( en )
