500        |a Biographical information: Mwenye Mansab was born in Lamu in AH 1247 (AD 1831) and died in AH 1340 (AD 1922). He was well-known as a man of intense religious devotion who spent his days in Lamu’s Rawdha mosque, where he wrote religious poems and translated Arabic religious texts into Swahili poems. He was a respected source of information on questions of religion, known for his ability to respond instantly to queries. Many of his exchanges with questioners are recounted in stories. One concerns his assertion that through good acts people earned themselves houses in heaven (‘umejengewa nyumba,’ he would tell someone who had acted well). When asked once whether heaven must not be growing awfully crowded with houses, Mwenye Mansab responded that not only did good acts build them, but bad ones tore them down, and in heaven as many houses were being demolished as were being constructed.

520 3    |a In this section of MS 47780 there is a Maulidi poem in Arabic, with translation in Swahili Arabic script. The author, Sayyid Mansab, a famous theologian from Lamu, took the poem from Sheikh Mohammed al-Araby, and shortened and translated into Swahili. The Arabic is written with red ink whereas the Swahili is written with black ink. In the preface to the poem however there is a note in red ink that states that the poem was originally written by Sheikh Barsanji and was then taken and shortened by Sheikh Mohammed al-Araby. Still in the preface, the author aligns himself with Other authors who have praised the Prophet Mohammed. The difference with Other authors is however the use of KiAmu. Also, Sayyid Mansab had given a new title to his version and called it ‘Elixir’. The poem praises the Prophet Mohammed, and according to Sayyid Mansab the recitation of the poem can be used to ask God for help in time of difficulty. Sayyid Mansab also instructs on how to recite the poem, like, for instance, he says that the place to read it has to be cleansed and the reader has to have new clean clothes. At the end of the Maulidi, there is a short two pages poem entitled ‘Ukuti wa Arafaji’.
