|a In this section of MS 47769 there are two letters by Omar b. Naman b. Muhammad BaShaikh to Rev. Taylor. The first letter is dated AD1893 (AH 1311) whereas the second one is not dated. Omar was in Mtanganyiko when he wrote the letter, and he tells Taylor of the ‘dengue fever’ ‘kidinaga p’opo’ he suffered from, as well as about the BaShaikh Mosque, formerly the Kilindini Mosque, that was renovated and enlarged by Omar’s father. The BaShaikh is a well-known and wealthy family from Mombasa who have been present on the coast for many generations, owning orchard tree plantations. |
