Notes
- Abstract:
- This manuscript contains a collection of Swahili poems, with notes, collected by Taylor in c. 1880, in Mombasa. The material was edited into the present volume by Hichens. In fact, Mrs Hichens sold the MS to SOAS. The MS is divided into sections C, D, E, F, however not in subsequent order. Starting from the right side of the MS, we found poems in Arabic scripts that contain transliteration and translation of words, used as keys to the reading. At the end of some poems, the author seems to be Bwana Harusi b. Abdullah b. Abubakar and he mentions that he found these poems that were thought to be lost. We have not further information on this issue. From the left side of the MS, there are poems in Roman scripts, although this is not a rule of the manuscript, as we found, on this side, poems in Arabic scripts, and on the right side, poems in Roman scripts. The poems include, four pages of a poem written by Mwalimu Sikujua (page 5-8, from left side), miscellaneous verses from Pate, modern verses from Muyaja bin Haji at page numbered 4 and 5. At page 19, numbered page 11 (from left side), there is a poem written by the people of Zanzibar attacking the people of Pemba for their misfortune and downfall, and at page 21 (numbered 13), there is an extract from the Utenzi wa Fumo Liongo. Finally, Section E contains word list and some sentences of KiNgazija, the language of the Comoro Islands. Taylor seemed to consider KiNgazija a Swahili dialect. ( en )
