|a This is the well-known poem written by Abu Bakr bin Mwengo about a battle in a valley, the Wadi Isban, between the Prophet Mohammed’s army and the army of an unbeliever, Katirifu. It is written in a northern dialect, with borrowings from Arabic, and it contains 421 stanzas. The manuscript contains many inaccuracies that are best revealed and corrected through comparison with another (if also imperfect) version, such as that of MS 380552 or that of Knappert (1969). A complete outline of the story is to be found in MS 380522. Because the pages are quite damaged, each one is contained within two blank pages as a way of better preserving the poem. |
