|a Biographical information: Fumo Liyongo is a mythical Swahili poet and hero, and it is tought that he composed many oral songs and poems narrating about his life time, which is around the 12th and 13th century. For more information on Liyongo, see the field ‘relevant publication’. -- Muyaka bin Haji lived in Mombasa between AD 1776-1840, and was one of the most outstanding poets of the mashairi genre. According to Abdulaziz (1979) Muyaka wrote some 150 poems of popular Swahili poetry, and the themes of his poetry touch on the cultural and political life of his community of that time. |

|a In this first section of MS 47754 (Volume III of the Taylor papers) there is, first, an index of the poems contained in the whole volume, listed by the poems’ first line. However, the index contained here lists more poems than those actually included. This section contains poems attributed to the mythical character Fumo Liyongo, transcribed by Mwalimu Sikujua, and poems by the famous Mombasan poet Muyaka bin Haji al-Ghassaniy. |
