|a This small notebook contains translations of Christian hymns into Swahili, made by Rev. Taylor during his stay in Mombasa at the end of the 19th century. Most hymns enclosed are dated between 1886 and 1890, and are Psalm from the Bible and from Catechism classes. This type of work was very common for missionaries, like Rev. Taylor, and the translation into Swahili was done mainly for religious education purposes. This manuscript is mainly handwritten and it seems to be a notebook for draft translations. In the middle of the notebook there are three leaves with published hymns collated to the pages however we do not have the actual reference for the publication. Some of the titles for the religious songs remained in English. The Swahili language used for the translation is the dialect of Mombasa, Kimvita, with some old expressions. Some parts of the manuscript, most probably notes, are scribbled and unreadable, and corrections seem to be made with blue ink, however without consistency. |
