|a This section of MS 41960 contains a few love songs, a few wadhi, and two short poems (mashairi). Each stanza of the love songs consists of one line only, with 3 vipande per line. The first song has 10 stanzas. The second song seems at first a continuation of the previous one, but it is rather different. It begins with ‘Nalikuota ndotoni tukiteza kiwandani nanangu nakutamani’ and tells of a dream. Here too the song begin in the middle of the long folded page, and it can be difficult to see when a new song begins. After the songs, we find a few short religious poems, waadhi. One, in particular, narrates of how the world is deceiving people, ‘inadhaa dunia’, and what we should do to avoid being misled. Finally, there are two related poems, mashairi, about the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. In the first, the people of Zanzibar make complains about the people of Pemba. In the second, the people of Pemba respond to the accusations. Although, the poems ares set in the southern Swahili area, the scribe uses the northern dialect. |
