Notes

Abstract:
This manuscript contains a large collection of Giryama proverbs collected by Rev. Taylor. The material is handwritten with extracts from the proverbs published in the book ‘African Aphorisms’. For instance, proverb 5 of the MS is to be found as proverb 601 in the ‘Giryama section’ of the book; and proverbs 9 is to be found as proverb 634b of the ‘Nyika section’ of the same book. [The complete material of ‘African Aphorisms’ can be found in MS 47752] . The Giryama people together with Other people of the Kenya’s interior used to be generally called ‘WaNyika’. This term of reference acquired a negative connotation and it is not longer used. Instead, the people of this region are called Mijikenda (the Nine ‘Tribes’). Taylor differentiates between Giryama and ‘Nyika’, and in his ‘African Aphorisms’ he dedicates a section to Giryama proverbs, 601 to 633, and a general section to ‘Nyika’ proverbs (from 634 to 644) . The whole manuscript is not dated and it appears in the form of a collage, probably put together from Taylor’s notes. Overall, it contains some 200 proverbs in Giryama language. ( en )
