|a Biographical information: Jan Knappert, in an introduction to the 1964 publication of ‘Kisa cha Miiraji’ (see MS 380747), writes that Mohamed Jambein Al-Bakry lived for some time in Mombasa, ‘probably at the beginning’ of the 20th century. Mohamed Jambein was also the author of ‘Kiokozi cha Banati’ (see MS 380749) and ‘Mashairi ya Faraidhwi’ (see MS 380748). In the present MS, the poet identifies himself as a native of Lamu |

|a This manuscript contains a maulid, a poem composed to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed. Unlike Other maulid in the Knappert Collection, this one (at least in this typescript) is not formally divided into sections. It treats many subjects more briefly than do the Other maulid and occasionally seems to be less carefully organised. However, it narrates an encounter with the monk Bukhaira, which some Other maulid do not treat; and close comparison would probably reveal Other differences of this sort. In the last line of stanza 21, ‘zizani’ is a plural for ‘vizani.’ ‘Ndivu’ in the first line of stanza 37 should read ‘ndovu.’ In the first line of stanza 38, ‘alosudisha’ should read ‘alosondesha.’ In the last line of stanza 68, ‘mtumwa’ should read ‘mtume’; and ‘surata’ in the third line of stanza 76 should read ‘suraqa.’ |
