a Biographical information: Knappert (1971) identifies Muhammad bin Othman as a resident of Shela. He also reports that the author in Arabic, Muhammad al-Azabi, described his own work as a poetic rendering of the prose maulid of Imam as-Sayyid Ja’far al-Barzanj

a The name ‘Al-Azabi,’ rather than ‘Al-Arabi’ or ‘Al-Azbi,’ is used here based on Knappert (1971). This poem is also contained in MS 380553, where it lacks explanatory notes and contains more errors. In that manuscript it is entitled Maulid Sharifu. See SOAS University of London manuscript MS 47779e for another rendering of the Maulid Al-Azabi..

a The poet, Muhammad bin Othman, begins by explaining that his work is a translation (of the maulidi by Muhammad al-Azabi, the Maulidi ya Dali). He describes in a poem the blessings enjoyed by those who read maulidi. From this point, the original Arabic text appears in red ink, and the Swahili poetic translation in blue. In the first chapter the poet praises God and prays for assistance in his endeavour. The second chapter concerns the creation of Mohammed; the third concerns Mohammed’s lineage; the fourth his conception; the fifth his birth; the sixth the wonders that accompanied his birth; the seventh his infancy and childhood; the eighth miraj, his miraculous journey to the heavens; the ninth the hijra from Mecca to Medina; and the tenth Mohammed’s appearance and character. The eleventh, concluding, chapter is a prayer. The scribe, Yahya Ali Omar, prefaces the poem with a discussion of the significance of Maulid and the occasions on which maulid texts are read. He also includes commentary within the poem.
