Notes

Abstract:
This manuscript contains a table of contents and a list of suggested illustrations in addition to text on the care of infants. The author discusses how to bandage the navel of a newborn; how to keep an infant clean; care of the eyes; care of the ears; care of the mouth and teeth; care of the nose; care of the fingernails; how to bathe a baby; clothing an infant and the care of clothes; how to ensure a child sleeps well; nursing an infant, including advice on using a wet nurse, on mOther’s milk as compared with cow’s and goat’s and on weaning; preparing food for an infant; how to care for a sick baby and treat various illness; the dangers of insects and how to combat them; and disciplining a child. Some parts of the discussion, for example the descriptions of the eye and ear, are basically scientific. Others are more opinionated; the author offers blame for mOthers who do not follow the instructions, a warning against traditional medicines, and advice against purchasing clothing printed with words unless one knows their meaning. Page 43 (end of first par.) suggests the author may have been associated with a church mission. Several references are made, without exact statistics, to a high rate of child mortality (more than half of children dying in their first year) in the country. That country may be either Kenya or Tanganyika. The stamp on the outside of the file and marginal comments suggest this manuscript was brought to the Inter-Territorial Language Committee for approval. ( en )
