Abstract:
This essay won first prize in a contest held by the Inter-Territorial Language Committee in 1947. In 1950, it was published as a book under the same title. The essay’s four chapters are ‘Kujifunza Ustaarabu,’ ‘Umoja wa Taifa,’ ‘Elimu’ and ‘Afya na Uraia.’ Within these headings, its scope is wide. Topics in the first chapter are ‘maana yake ustaarabu,’ ‘kupigania ustaarabu’ and ‘kujenga ustaarabu’; in the second, ‘maendeleo ya ustaarabu,’ ‘malezi ya mtoto na utashi wa nyumbani kwao’ and ‘matendo zaidi kuliko maneno’; in the third, ‘ufunguo,’ ‘elimu imfaayo Mwafrika,’ ‘elimu katika ustaarabu’ and ‘elimu ya wanawake katika ustaarabu’; and in the fourth, ‘maisha ya watu,’ ‘wajibu wa wenye elimu kwa wasio na elimu,’ and ‘kueneza elimu.’ A table of contents and author’s introduction are included.
