520 3    |a This utenzi describes the testing of Moses by the angels Michael and Jibril, who are disguised as a hawk and a dove. The dove greets Moses and asks for his protection, which the prophet extends. It is soon followed by a hawk that criticises Moses for hindering its hunting, which was ordained by God. In the ensuing dispute, the hawk and the dove insist on the justice of their desires; but in this copy the poem breaks of in about the 27th stanza. The scribe prefaces the poem with a note commenting that it is an utenzi that also conforms to the waji waji poetic form. The poem is also known as Hadithi ya Mtumi Musa, and is thus called in the Allen collection. Abou Egl (1983) notes that the title of one manuscript version of the poem, being entirely in Arabic, indicates that it was translated from that language, and he presents evidence that the translator was Kujumwa himself.
