Notes

Abstract:
This poem represents a wife’s lament on learning that her husband has married a second, young wife. Thematically similar to ‘Mke na Mume’ of MS 380743, it is shorter and more disjointed than that poem. The versions share just two lines: ‘Uodhe nke nsichana/ na mahari ni wako nchundo.’ Yet this similarity, combined with the thematic agreement and the oral nature of the poem, permits identification of the manuscripts as two versions of the same. As with MS 380059b, this poem is judged by its collector to be essentially unrelated to the kimai of MS 380059a. Unlike ‘Makame na Midhe’ of MS 380059b, ‘Mke na Mume’ lacks even perfunctory reference to the sea. ( en )
