520 3    |a The narrative in this fragment of the ‘Utenzi wa Muhamadi’ begins in the middle of the war of Uhud. The poem next narrates the wars of Handak and Hunen, giving references to Qur’anic ayas. It then describes Mohammed’s efforts to obtain entry for his followers into Mecca so that they may complete their pilgrimage; the Muslims apply to Othman bin Affan for assistance. The manuscript breaks off in the midst of this narrative. A note accompanying the manuscript gives c. 1870 as its date. Consideration of the language of the utenzi, however, reveals this date to be erroneous. The manuscript must date from well into the 20th century, as suggested by such characteristics as the frequent use of the phrases ‘mwezi wa Februari’ and ‘namba wani’; the use of the phrase ‘fanya speksheni’; and the use of ‘maji ndani ya glasi.’ This poem may be known by titles Other than ‘Utenzi wa Muhamadi.’
