|a This section of manuscript 53829 discusses the abolition of slavery in East Africa that took place in 1907, and its implications for both slaves and masters. The ex-slaves had smaller compensation than in Other districts, and they either remained to work in the plantation of their former masters or moved to freed area. The masters found the transition quite difficult as large estates went out of cultivation. In general, the view of the author of the manuscript is that new ordinances, such as the abolition of slavery or the hut tax ordinance, conflicted with the previous socio-economic structure. This section ends with a short paragraph on the verbal pact on tax payment made with the Somali people. |
