Abstract:
In two essays, dated 1933 and 1924, J. Clive and Sullivan, A. W. write about the kind of boat called mtepe. The former author focuses on the construction and appearance of the boats (‘The Mtepe’), while the latter focuses on economics: the financing of journeys (conducted to sell mangrove poles), the wages of crew and captain and relations with boat-owners (‘The Owners of Mitepe and Their Baharia’).
