|a The first part of this section contains poetic songs from Mombasa, relating to the Mazrui dynasty during the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the poems entitled ‘ (Inye)Enyi mushonao nguo’ is the same poem as ‘Shairi la Washona-nguo wa Mambasa’, the latter contained in the Taylor papers (MS 47754). Most probably Hichens received the poem from A Werner who got it herself from Taylor. The poem describes the work and life of the tailors of Mombasa who were making kanzu (male Muslim dress). The poems contained here have many spelling and grammatical errors that probably occurred during typing. This part is followed by a poem by Al-Kasabi of Zanzibar; three poems by Kombo Bwete, a poet of Pemba; and a takhmis poem by Bwana Harusi bin Abdalla of Lamu. |
