520 3    |a This section of MS 53508 contains a collection of traditional songs attributed to Bwana Bakari (bin Bw.) Mwengo. We do not have biographical information about this author, and Hichens seems to be unsure of his identity. In fact, he refers to him also as Abubakari b. Muhammad bw. Mwengo, also rendered as bw. Migu. However we can assume that he was the son of the famous poet Bwana Mwengo. These are traditional oral songs and we do not have their dates of composition as they were transmitted orally for many generations. Typical of this genre, the poem opens with the sounds of the drum that calls for the audience to gather, as noted in the previous item of this MS. For this collection too we can assume that the songs were transcribed by Muhammad Kijumwa who may have given them to Alice Werner, who gave them to Hichens, or given directly to Hichens by Muhammed Kijumwa.
