520 3    |a The poem contained in this first section of MS 53508 begins ‘Qala Abdalla bin Songora’, which means Abdalla bin Songora said. This is a common opening for short poems by little-known poets. We do not have biographical information on Abdalla bin Songora(o). He uses the northern dialect, and states in the poem itself that he was not a proper poet. The poem is a religious takhmisi with five lines in each of the 38 stanzas comprising the poem. As often in religious poems, the introduction is a prayer in the name of God and a request to God to help the Prophet Mohammed and his companions, as well as the Prophet’s descendants (Stanza 1 to 6). The poem begins at Stanza 7, and uses, in order, a letter of the Arabic alphabet in the first line of each stanza. In a fashion similar to the Miraji (Mss 53497c; 53497h), the poem discusses the journey to Paradise, and to Hell.
