- Abstract:
- This section of MS 53507 deals specifically with the beginning of Portuguese colonisation on the East Africa Coast. The narrative is most probably by W Hichens who collected the information for the purpose of chapter 6 of the book on Swahili Literature that (as mentioned in the previous items of this MS) was not published. The information seems to be based on chronicles and oral history data. The Portuguese invasion began in 1498, when Vasco de Gama arrived in Mombasa, and the history provided here covers the period up to 1630. The Portuguese had garrisons in the main towns along the coast, and they faced fierce opposition from the local rulers. ( en )
