- Abstract:
- This section contains a bibliography compiled by Hichens for what should have become a book on the history of Swahili literature, covering the period between AD 1200 and AD 1938. The book was ultimately not published, and the present manuscript contains all the material selected for it. The bibliography is divided into 6 sections: - Swahili language - Comparative Linguistics - History and Customs - Islam - Arabic and Arabian Poetry - Swahili Literature There is then a list of books published in the Swahili language. FInally, there is a 15 page bibliography of historical sources. These are divided into: - Portuguese histories and narratives - Eastern Travels - History and Topography - Oriental Authorities - Miscellaneous The content of this manuscript should be consulted together with Mss 53491 and 53495, as the latter are also collection of material for the publication of an anthology of Swahili Poets ( en )
