Notes
- Abstract:
- This manuscript consists of two incomplete typescripts of 25 and 24 leaves. The first contains an insert absent from the second and is marked with corrections in ink; Otherwise they appear to be identical. The table of contents accompanying each outlines ten chapters of the Kitab as-Sulwa, but the typescripts break off in the seventh chapter and, prior to that, suffer from apparent omissions. The Kitab narrates the founding of Kilwa and the rule of successive sultans. An envelope accompanying the typescripts indicates that they probably represent a translation by John Walker, who was a numismatist at the British Museum, of the Kitab as-Salwa fi Akhbar Kilwa, also known as the Kilwa Chronicle. Scholars who discuss the ‘Kitab’ include S. Arthur Strong (1895), John Walker (1936) and H.N. Chittick (1974). Strong’s 1895 publication includes the Kitab in Arabic. ( en )
