520 3    |a This manuscript contains the same material as MS 205000 and MS 53493. An extensive description can be found in MS 205000, and here we have divided the volume into two main sections. In this first section, there is an historical description by W. Hichens of the Liyongo saga, with extracts from songs attributed to Liyongo, used as explanation and examples, as well as pictures illustrating the area and the people of the Lamu archipelago. Some pictures refer specifically to the poems discussed. W. Hichens, in the table of contents, divides this section into the introduction and chapters 1 and 2, which he entitles: - Introduction: The Liongo Tradition and its sources - Chapter 1: Liongo, his birth, parentage and early life - Chapter 2: The accession to Shanga; Liongo’s conquests; the plots against him; his assassination and death. In order to provide historical information on the life and works of Liyongo, Hichens uses extracts from Liongo songs and poems, like, for instance, ‘Hadithi ya Liongo’, ‘Sifu Uta Wangu, ‘Dungeon Song’, ‘Wedding songs’, and the ‘Warrior’s Song’.
