|a This volume contains materials that were prepared c. 1935 by Muhammad Kijumwa, in response to questions and requests from William Hichens. It begins with a letter in which Kijumwa discusses various poems and refers to a request for information on his life; to provide Hichens with that, writes Kijumwa, would be ‘udhia na kazi kubwa.’ Kijumwa thanks Hichens for payment and for a gift and sends greeting to Alice Werner, whom he calls Binti Yusufu. The next page of the volume, headed with illustrations of animals, contains explanations of words in Al-Inkishafi and discussion of acrostic poems. After this is an extensive gloss of the poem Wajiwaji. Then comes a page on Utenzi wa Ayubu that also contains verses from the Qur’an (on slander against Aisha) with an imprecise Swahili translation. Further quotation and notes related to Aisha are contained on the reverse page. Notes on Utenzi wa Miiraji follow; then a list of Kingovi vocabulary, with Roman transliteration of that list; and then fragmentary notes on the meaning of ‘sirat’ and on Utenzi wa Barasisi. |
