|a This manuscript contains a hadithi (story) in Swahili, probably translated from Arabic by Mohammed Kijumwa. Abou Egl (1983) writes of two manuscripts containing a story similar to this that were sent by Muhammad Kijumwa to William Hichens circa 1934. The prevalence of the Kiamu dialect in the present manuscript, together with Abou Egl’s record, suggest that the story in this manuscript originated with Kijumwa, who probably translated it from Arabic (see also Abou Egl, who refers to Kijumwa’s source for this story in the section entitled ‘Kadhi na Haramii’). The typescript contains errors that may have arisen during transliteration. The story narrates an encounter between a kadhi who is walking alone and a thief who tries to steal the kadhi’s clothes. Both characters use passages from the Qur’an to justify their positions. The moral of the story is that one should not travel alone; this teaching is contained in the Qur’an. |
